APCER’s first social Accountability System Certificate

APCER (Portuguese Certification Association) gained and holds market share leadership of certification bodies in Portugal by being client oriented. So, conscious of the growing awareness and concern with social accountability and business ethics in Portugal, APCER made available a new service SA8000 - Social Accountability System.

In June 2005, TNT, national leader in express transportation, received from APCER the Social Responsibility certificate, according to the SA8000 standard, for the scope of “global express, logistics and mail“.

The SA8000 system enables TNT, and other organisations interested in this certification, to control the impact of social activities, through the accomplishment of SA8000 requirements, namely:
    1. Child Labor
    2. Forced Labor
    3. Health and Safety
    4. Freedom of Association and Right to Collective Bargaining
    5. Discrimination
    6. Discipline
    7. Working Hours
    8. Compensation
    9. Management Systems
According to Alice Tepper Marlin, SAI (Social Accountability International), CEO and President: “Gains in supply chain productivity and quality and enhanced brand reputation are just some of the reasons why retailers, brand companies and other employers worldwide have chosen to use the humane workplace standard SA8000”.

These main advantages are subscribed by TNT and Cooprofar/Mercafar (Medicine and other pharmaceutical products trade and distribution (Cooprofar) / Medicine and other health products representation, promotion, distribution and logistic services (Mercafar)), another APCER SA8000 certified client of July 2005.

SAI is the organisation that developed and manages the SA8000 social accountability system, which enhances the advantages of a humane workplace for companies, workers and other stakeholders.
