IECQ/ECCB Grant first registration to IECQ-HSPM to SigmaTel, Inc. of Austin

National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI), certifies that integrated circuit maker SigmaTel, Inc. of Austin, Texas, has in place the plans and programs to manage and eliminate hazardous substances from their products and processes. NSAI, an accredited Supervising Inspectorate for the International Electrotechnical Commission’s quality assessment system for electronic components, known as IECQ, offers several IECQ certification products, which are recognized internationally. NSAI based its assessment and certification of SigmaTel on the new EIA/ECCB – 954 internationally accepted standard on this subject, produced jointly by the Electronic Industries Alliance and the Electronic Components Certification Board. The EIA/ECCB 954 standard, commonly referred to as "EIA-954" or IECQHSPM (for hazardous substances process management), was published in March of 2005 and adopted by the IECQ Management Committee in April 2005. IECQ HSPM Certification demonstrates a company’s commitment to meeting the intent of European Union RoHS and WEEE directives that cover restrictions on hazardous substances and disposal of electrical and electronic equipment

SIGMATEL FIRST COMPANY CERTIFIED ON THE NEW HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE PROCESS MANAGEMENT STANDARD

New Certification Further Underscores SigmaTel’s Industry Leadership and Commitment to Providing Total Solutions to its Customers

AUSTIN, Texas (Oct. 11, 2005) – SigmaTel, Inc. (NASDAQ: SGTL), a leader in mixed-signal multimedia semiconductors, today announced that it is the first company in the world to be granted registration from IECQ/ECCB for the IECQ-Hazardous Substance Process Management (HSPM ), which is based on the Electrical and Electronic Components and Products Hazardous Substance Free Standard, EIA/ECCB-954 International Standard. The EIA/ECCB-954 Standard was developed to build on the framework of the ISO 9001-2000 Quality Management System (QMS) to form a comprehensive, systematic and transparent management process for the elimination of hazardous substances. The standard which is commonly referred to as "954" or HSPM, allows an organization to demonstrate that it is meeting the requirements of RoHS and WEEE.

"It is an honor that SigmaTel is the first company in the world to be registered by IECQ/ECCB on the HSPM standard," said Ron Edgerton, SigmaTel’s president and CEO. "SigmaTel is very committed to its environmental roadmap and ensuring that it continues to deliver innovative products that meet its customer’s needs and all statutory and regulatory requirements."

SigmaTel’s HSPM certification ensures the company has internal processes to recognize its customer’s, as well as statutory and regulatory, requirements for hazardous substance free products. The certification further showcases SigmaTel’s compliance to statutory and regulatory requirements. As part of the process to receive the EIA/ECCB-954 Standard certification, SigmaTel instituted stringent supply chain management requirements to ensure that its product are completely free of hazardous substances. SigmaTel suppliers are required to be HSPM certified and/or have third party certificates of compliance on all materials used in SigmaTel products.

"The new EIA/ECCB-954 Standard has raised the bar on how companies manage the elimination of hazardous substances and NSAI is leading the industry to ensure that companies meet this new standard," said Chris Morrell, Development Manager, NSAI, Inc. "SigmaTel is the first company in the world to institute the stringent requirements and will be looked at as a model for how other companies become certified on the EIA/ECCB-954 Standard."

The certification from the IECQ and ECCB is proof of SigmaTel’s due diligence to eliminate hazardous substances from all of its products and throughout its supply chain. SigmaTel’s HSPM assessment was conducted by NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland) and ECCB. The EIA/ECCB-954 standard was developed with input and consultation from global industry leaders such as Boeing, Northrop-Grumman, Honeywell, Rockwell-Collins, and Phillips and in accordance with supply chain requirements required by Sony, Ricoh, Samsung and Intel.

In addition to the HSPM Standard certification, SigmaTel announced in March 2005 that it was shipping products fully compliant with European Unions Restriction on Hazardous Substances.
